Air Cargo

Air cargo is a fertile source of employment and economic opportunity for metro Atlanta. To support this burgeoning business, ATL continues to expand its cargo facilities and operations.

Overview

ATL will undergo a phased expansion of facilities, with a goal of adding up to 1 million square feet of warehouse space. At the same time, ATL will construct a vehicle staging area to relieve cargo truck congestion, and also add parking capacity for cargo aircraft and vehicles. The work is expected to total more than $200 million in upgrades.

Project Timeline

Current and upcoming expansion projects are scheduled to continue until 2021:

  • Cargo Buildings 2A/2B: 2017-2019
  • Cargo Building 1: 2017-2021

Benefits

The expansion of warehouse space and cargo facilities will help usher in a new level of cargo operations at ATL. Four new all-cargo airlines began operations at ATL in 2015, and plans are in the works for additional carriers to begin service in the coming years. Also in 2015, ATL handled more than 626,000 metric tons of cargo, growing cargo volume 4.15 percent over 2014. To accommodate the continuing growth, additional space is needed.

Impacts During Construction

Most updates to the cargo capacities will have minimal impact on the average passenger at ATL. Cargo operations will continue during the construction phases, and cargo stakeholders will be advised of any disruption to schedules and services during the process.
